Year 8 🔢 Number  Write very large and very small numbers in standard form.

🔬 Standard Form

Standard form (scientific notation) writes very large or small numbers as $a \times 10^n$ where $1 \leq a < 10$.

Standard Form
$$a \times 10^n, \quad 1 \leq a < 10, \quad n \in \mathbb{Z}$$
Large: 45,000 = 4.5 × 10⁴
Small: 0.0032 = 3.2 × 10⁻³

🧮 Converting

  • Write the number with the decimal after the first non-zero digit
  • Count how many places the decimal moved → that is the power of 10
  • Moved right = positive power. Moved left = negative power
