Place Value & Ordering
Year 7 🔢 Number Understand place value up to millions, compare and order integers and decimals.
🔢 What is Place Value?
Every digit in a number has a place value — its position tells us how much it is worth.
| Millions | Hundred Thousands | Ten Thousands | Thousands | Hundreds | Tens | Ones |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
In 4,327: the 4 = 4 thousands (4,000), 3 = 3 hundreds (300), 2 = 2 tens (20), 7 = 7 ones (7).
📐 Ordering Numbers
To order numbers, line up the decimal points and compare digits from left to right.
Example: Order 4.07, 4.7, 4.17 from smallest to largest.
4.07 < 4.17 < 4.70 — compare the tenths digit first: 0 < 1 < 7
4.07 < 4.17 < 4.70 — compare the tenths digit first: 0 < 1 < 7
🎯 Rounding
To round to a given place: look at the digit to the right. If it is 5 or more, round up.
⚡ Rounding Rule
$$\text{Digit} \geq 5 \Rightarrow \text{Round UP} \qquad \text{Digit} < 5 \Rightarrow \text{Round DOWN}$$Example: Round 3.456 to 1 d.p. → Look at 2nd decimal (5) → Round up → 3.5
