Averages & Range
Year 7 📈 Statistics & Probability Calculate mean, median, mode and range from data sets.
📊 Mean
The mean is the sum of all values divided by the number of values.
Mean Formula
$$\bar{x} = \frac{\sum x}{n}$$Example: Data: 3, 5, 7, 9, 11
Mean = (3+5+7+9+11) ÷ 5 = 35 ÷ 5 = 7
Mean = (3+5+7+9+11) ÷ 5 = 35 ÷ 5 = 7
📈 Median
The median is the middle value when data is ordered.
For an even count, the median is the mean of the two middle values.
Example: 2, 3, 5, 7, 9 → median = 5 (3rd value)
🎯 Mode & Range
The mode is the most frequent value. The range measures spread.
Range
$$\text{Range} = \text{Largest} - \text{Smallest}$$Data: 4, 7, 7, 9, 11, 7, 3
Mode = 7 (appears 3 times)
Range = 11 − 3 = 8
Mode = 7 (appears 3 times)
Range = 11 − 3 = 8
